111 - RUNNING, SKILL SPECIFIC TO BASEBALL Players blessed with an abundance of speed have a
physical advantage. Good running ability attributes to being a good fielder and base
runner. A good base runner will often bat higher in the order than a slower or less
skilled runner. Players with good running instincts can advance on a ball hit in front of
them. They are also used in hit and run, suicide squeeze plays. Many professional baseball
organizations use running speed as the main factor in their blue prints for building their
