204 SECOND BASE - TASKS INVOLVED AND TIPS TO IMPROVE PLAY
bluebasebar.gif (4146 bytes)

Set Position:
1. Feet should be slightly spread about shoulder width a part.
2. Toes turned out slightly to make the lateral move easier.

Ready Position:
Note: When the pitcher releases the ball the second baseman should assume the ready position. The difference between the set and ready positions are slight but very significant.
1. The hands move from the knees, just out in front, with the back straight and
    head up.
2. The eyes focused intently on the strike zone. Focusing on the ball being
    hitfrom the strike zone.

Fielding Ground Balls:
1. Move towards the ball, stay low {do not straighten up) while doing so.
Straightening up causes the bodies' weight to shift from the balls of
the feet to the back of the heels.
Also, staying low (bending with the
knees,) the body is under control and the eyes can stay on the ball as it rolls
     into the glove.
2. Ground balls that are hit to the right side require the second baseman to
take a cross over step first. Shifting the body into the same direction,
while staying low during the strides towards the ball.

Fielding Pop Flies:
1. Go back on all pop flies until an outfielder calls you off.
2. Always make an effort to get to the balls that are hit to right field, that are
just behind the first baseman. If, you are in a better fielding position call
    for the catch.

The Double Play:
1. Do not leave your fielding position too soon. The ball is your focus, as it
    maybe hit towards you.
2. Do not assume that every ball hit is a double play chance. Getting the lead
    runner is the priority.
