307 SLIDING AND TIPS TO IMPROVE      PLAY

There are three purposes in sliding:
1. To avoid a collision.
2. To avoid being tagged.
3. To stop at a base.

In the "lower" and "middle" levels of baseball the hook slide is the only slide that should be used. Leave the head first slide to those who are earning their living from baseball. The head first slide can be dangerous because of the surfaces which amateur ball is played on, and the inexperience of defence players not knowing how to tag properly.

Pop Up Slide:
1. Start your slide six to eight feet from the base.
2. As you enter your slide, tuck your right leg up and under your left leg. Hit the bag with your left foot. This allows you to pop up, as you hit the bag.
3. Always keep both your hands up in the air over you head, until you hit the bag.
